SP RED RAIDERS CRUISE INTO PLAYOFFS
SOUTH POINT CRUSHES NORTH GASTON IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

Belmont – On Friday night the South Point Red Raiders hosted the North Gaston Wildcats for the regular season football finale. The Red Raiders scored 28 first quarter points on their way to a 49-14 victory as they head into the playoffs next week. The Red Raiders put two more unanswered scores on the board in the second quarter to give them a commanding 42-0 half-time lead.
South Point’s first score came on a 9-yard run by Tyson Riley and he followed that with a 20-yard scamper with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Red Raiders next score came on a 24-yard pass from quarterback Elijah Phiffer to wide receiver Jackson Blee. Tyson Riley posted the final South Point score of the first quarter on a 37-yard sprint.
In the second quarter the Chaynce Ford came off the bench and piled up 105 yards rushing in only nine carries and two of those attempts went for touchdowns. His first score came with 8:05 left in the second quarter on a 16-yard run and his second score came on a 5-yard run with only one second left in the half.
Neither team was able to dent the score board in the third quarter and with a running clock both teams only had one possession.
In the final quarter the Red Raiders tallied their final score on a 2-yard run by Ashton Green for a 49-0 lead.
North Gaston scored their only offensive touchdown on their next possession when quarterback Kandan Zollo hooked up with Brian Coley for a 13-yard TD pass. On South Point’s next possession, they mishandled a handoff near mid-field and North Gaston linebacker Jayvain Knox scooped up the ball and scampered 40 yards to paydirt for the final points of the contest and a 49-14 score.
The Red Raiders totaled 338 yards rushing in 45 carries and Phiffer went 1-2-0 in the passing department for another 24 yards to account for a total offensive output of 362 yards. They moved the chains 17 times, they lost two of four fumbles and they were penalized seven times for 50 yards.
The Wildcats had a total of 212 offensive yards with 32 yards rushing on 13 carries. Zollo completed 16 of 23 passes for and additional 180 yards with the North Gaston aerial attack but he tossed one interception. His favorite target was Brian Coley who had 7 receptions for 78 yards. North Gaston had seven first downs and they were penalized 10 times for 75 yards.
South Point will likely have a home game next week for the first round of the NCHSAA football playoffs.
