SOUTH POINT TAKES SEASON OPENER AGAINST LINCOLNTON
By: Anthony Perkins
Lincolnton – The visiting South Point Red Raiders put a damper on the Lincolnton Wolves for Friday nights season opener with a 35-21 win. South Point quarterback Patrick Blee notched two scores on runs of 24 and 52 yards to forge a 14 -7 lead in the first quarter. The Wolves kept close by squeezing in a touchdown between the two South Point scores when running back Khamoni Heath scored on a 3-yard run. Lincolnton was poised to draw even again on their next possession but an interception by Red Raider defender Javonte Lowery ended the threat just before the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter and on their next possession the Red Raiders stretched the lead to 21 -17 when Blee scored again on a 22-yard jaunt. After the South Point score their defense shut down the Lincolnton offense and forced a punt. South Point then advanced the ball into the ‘red zone’ but two penalties after a first and goal at the ten kept pushing the Red Raiders in the wrong direction. Lincolnton took over after a missed South Point field goal attempt with 2:19 left in the half and they were able to push the ball down to the South Point 27 before the clock ran out and the score remained at 21-7 in favor of South Point going into the half.
Both teams added one touchdown in the third quarter. South Point fullback Chaynce Ford added the first score on a three-yard run with 4:28 left on the clock. Lincolnton followed that with a brilliant run by Nehemiah Lynch who started right, reversed the field and ran down the left side for a 46-yard score. The point after failed and the Red Raiders held a 28-13 lead going into the last quarter.
South Point’s next possession ran over into the fourth quarter and they topped off a nine play, 71-drive with a five yard fullback dive play by Ford for their last score of the game and a 35-13 lead. Lincolnton added one more score on a 23-yard run by quarterback Andre Bost and a two-point conversion run by Heath, but it was too little too late. The Wolves had one more opportunity to score but a pick by South Point’s Kam Crawford at the Red Raider 28 ended the threat just before the end of the contest. Final score: South Point 35, Lincolnton 21.
South Point finished the game with 418 yards rushing on 50 attempts. The Red Raiders went 1-3-0 in the passing department for only 9 yards and a total offensive output of 427 yards. Quarterback Patrick Blee was the top rusher with 227 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries while fullback Chaynce Ford added 158 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns.
