Kings Mountain Dominates, Beats Shelby For First Time Since 2010

Coming into this game, the Shelby Golden Lions were averaging 50 points a game while giving up 18 on average. The Kings Mountain Mountaineers were averaging 38 points while giving up 8. So something had to give. Kings Mountain’s offense and defense set the tone for the game early.

Rashard Brooks drew first blood with a 13-yard touchdown run (PAT good) to get the Mountaineers on the board early. Brooks would score another touchdown on the next drive. This time it would be a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Reid (PAT good) to go up 14-0.

It would not be until early in the second quarter that the Golden Lions would get on the board. Kicker Caden Sheely’s 37-yard field-goal cut the Mountaineers lead to 14-3. But the Mountaineers would take advantage of a huge Shelby error. Reid would find Quintin Davidson left all alone after some blown coverage and would hit him for a lone 85-yard touchdown pass (PAT good). That extended Kings Mountain’s lead to 21-3. Shelby did score their first touchdown of the game when Isaiah Bess connected with Diavonni Daley for a 26-yard touchdown pass (PAT good). The Mountaineers were in position to extend the lead at the end of the first half. But a 44-yard field-goal attempt by Austin Browning fell just short.

The Mountaineers got the ball to start the second half and would not slow down one bit. Reid once again connected with Davidson for another touchdown (26 yards). Browning’s extra point kick made it 28-10. But the Golden Lions would storm back with another Bess to Daley connection (12-yards). Sheely’s extra point kick cut the lead to 28-17. But that would be as close as they would get.

Reid would have two more passing touchdowns before this one was over. Reid would appear to be scrambling out of bounds before unloading a 33-yard touchdown strike to James Ussery (PAT good) and would put the nail in the coffin in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Kobe Paysour (PAT good). Austin Browning was 6-for-6 on extra point kicks.

In the 42-17 victory, Ethan Reid passed for 281 yards and 5 touchdowns. Rasard Brooks amassed 159 total years (135 rushing and 24 receiving) and 2 touchdown (1 rushing, 1 receiving). The Kings Mountain defense held the Golden Lions to just 173 yards of total offense and they sacked Shelby quarterback Isaiah Bess 6 times with Robert Lipscomb getting 4 of those sacks. Titus Phillips recorded an interception for the Mountaineers. Bess passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns for Shelby, both to Diavonni Daley, and the interception.

Both teams begin conference play next week. Shelby (3-1) travels to East Gaston (0-4) to begin Southwestern 2A play and Kings Mountain (5-0) travels to Stuart Cramer (2-3) to begin Big South 3A play.
