Chavion Smith’s 3 3rd Quarter Touchdown Runs leads Hounds to win over county rival Lake Norman

Tonight just outside of Race City USA. Two top Iredell County teams looked to race to a 2-0 start. Last week both Statesville (40-12 over Hickory) and Lake Norman (34-22 over Cox Mill) had impressive wins. So you know this would be a good one and it was until the 3rd quarter where Statesville becomes intimidators after halftime.
As the game got started the Lake Norman would receive the opening possession. Will Gordon would receive a big run but the drive would stall and the Wildcats would be forced to punt. Statesville would answer through the air. As Nebayne Moore would hit Ky’wuan Dukes on huge pass play. The drive would be finished on a Moore pass to Jasaiah Gathings for a 38 yard pass play. (PAT good ) Greyhounds lead 7 to 0. The Wildcats would answer right back as they drove deep into Statesville territory. Unfortunately for Lake Norman Anthony Limon was pick off by Tymon Tucker and the Greyhounds start around midfield. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds the drive would stall and the Hounds would be forced to punt on 4th down. That’s when disaster would strike for Statesville as the ball would go over the punters head and Lake Norman would take over deep into Statesville territory. Lake Norman would capitalize as they would get to the Greyhounds 24. Ending the first quarter with Statesville leading 7 to 0.
As the 2nd quarter started the Wildcats would only need 2 minutes and 6 seconds. As Lake Norman would get a 3rd down strike from quarterback Anthony Limon to Christan Taylor on a 22 yard touchdown pass (Pat good ) the game is tied at 7 with 9:54 left in the 2nd quarter. The Hounds would right back with Nebayne Moore and Ky’wuan Dukes legs and the drive would be finished with a Nebayne Moore to Jasaiah Gathings 8 yard touchdown pass (Pat good). Statesville leads 14 to 7 with 7:07 left in the 2nd quarter. Lake Norman would need nearly the rest of the half to tie it up. The drive would start with a Will Gordon big run and a personal foul would get Lake Norman deep into Statesville territory. The Wildcats would get all the way to Statesville 1 yard line. They would need all 4 downs when it got to first and goal. This would lead to a key 4th and goal at the Greyhounds 1 with seconds left til half. Anthony Limon would pay off as he converted on a 1 yard qb keeper (Pat good). We are tied at 14 at the half.
After halftime the 3rd quarter for the 2nd time in a week would be dominated by the Statesville Greyhounds. They would receive the kickoff on a pooch kick and start around midfield. Statesville would get nice runs by running backs Chavion Smith and Caylon Imes. The drive would continue as Nebayne Moore would hit Ky’wuan Dukes on a key 3rd down pass play. The drive would be finished with a 6 yard run by Chavion Smith. (Pat good) Statesville leads 21 to 14. On the kickoff Lake Norman would make a huge mistake as the returner would touch the ball Statesville recovers to set up 1st and goal. Few plays later Chavion Smith runs it in for a 3 yard touchdown run. ( Kick blocked ) Statesville leads 27 to 14 with 8:05 left in the 3rd quarter. After a Lake Norman 3 and out . Statesville would then go on a long drive and it would be finished off by Chavion Smith’s short touchdown run (his 3rd touchdown run of the quarter). (Pat good) Statesville leads 34 to 14. Lake Norman would try to get back in the game with a long drive late into the 3rd quarter through mid through the 4th quarter. But the drive would stall on a failed 4th down pass play with 6:43 left in the game. Lake Norman would finally reach the endzone with 1:43 left in the game. Lake Norman was unable to get the onsides kick and the Greyhounds would run out the clock as they that it 34 to 14 over Lake Norman.
With the win Statesville improves to (2-0) on the season and will travel to (2-0) Alexander Central next Friday (who defeated Wilkes Central28 to 12 Friday). With the lose Lake Norman falls to (1-1) and will travel to South Iredell (who defeated West Iredell 25 to 0 Friday).

Good write up Allen. Statesville seems to make a Statement. Should be a good game next week with Statesville n Alexander Central. I feel like Statesville may well be the favor in next game with AC. Should they win don’t be surprised they run the table until the last game when they meet up with West Rowan. A lot of things can happen but if that game happens for the title, that will make some good coverage.South Iredell n Lake Norman could be a good game but South is down and don’t be surprised that LN prevails in that one.
