SOUTH POINT JUST TOO MUCH FOR LINCOLNTON IN OPENER

BELMONT – The 2021 edition of the South Point Red Raiders kicked off the new season with a 46-7 win over the visiting Lincolnton Wolves on Friday evening.

The Red Raiders first two possessions of the game started in Lincolnton territory and both led to quick touchdowns to give South Point a quick 14-0 lead.  At the same time the Red Raider defense limited the Wolfpack to consecutive three and outs that forced Lincolnton to punt the ball from deep inside their side of the field.

South Point first drive started at the Lincolnton 49-yard line which fullback Tyson Riley capped off with a 28-yard touchdown run on the fifth play.  Kick returner William Ross’ punt return enabled the Red Raiders to start their second possession at the Lincolnton 19 -yard line.  After a nine-yard loss on first down Riley got into the Lincolnton secondary on a run up the middle and notched his second score on a 28-yard run to push the South Point lead to 14-0.

Lincolnton’s offense came to life on their third possession and a ten-play drive that rolled over into the second quarter finished with 22-yard pass from Andre Bost to Bernard Wingate for a 22-yard touchdown strike that ended the scoring for both teams in the first half.

South Point coach Adam Hodge said after the game, “When you coach football the one thing that you really like to see your kids do is respond to what you tell them to do.  We made a few defensive changes and it took a while for the offense to settle down.  But they did and it worked out really good for us this evening.”  (South Point’s starting quarterback was not available to play tonight and the backup quarterback suffered a mild injury in the first quarter so they had to go three deep to fill the quarterback slot for the game.)

The team must have soaked up what they were told during the half because the second half was “All South Point.”

The Red-Bone offense put up three touchdowns in the third quarter.  The first two came on runs of 11 and 17 yards by fullback Tyson Riley and the third score came on a 53-yard pass from David Howard to tight end Jackson Blee.  The South Point defense only allowed 16 yards and two first downs to the Lincolnton offense during that same quarter. If you are doing the math that means that Lincolnton had several plays with negative yards.

Leading by a score of 35-7 the fourth quarter was played by the reserves and by a few JV players that were called up for the game.  South Point’s final offensive score came on a three-yard run by Dalton Skipper late in the fourth quarter however, the Red Raider defense had netted back-to-back safeties on Lincolnton’s two previous possessions to make the final score 46-7.  South Point kicker Charles Birtwistle connected on all six of his point after attempts.

South Point finished with 220 yards rushing on 43 attempts and Howard 1-2-1 in the passing departments for another 53 yards and a total offensive output of 273 yards.  South Point garnered 10 first downs, they were assessed 20 yards in penalties.   The Red Raiders suffered one fumble when a short Lincolnton punt hit a potential South Point return blocker in the head.

Lincolnton’s offense accumulated 79 rushing yards on 35 attempts and Andre Bost went 5-9-0 in the passing game for an additional 49 yards to push the Wolfpack offensive output to 128 yards.  Lincolnton had zero turnovers, they moved the chains seven times and they were penalized for 65 yards.

Next week the Red Raiders will travel to East Gaston and the Wolves will be at home for North Lincoln.
