Shelby Remains On Top Of Conference Race, Knocks Off Burns

It was a game of speed, big plays, some defense and a few miscues. But it was also a game of flags after flags. After all the smoke cleared, it was Shelby that was left standing with a 26-13 victory over visiting Burns.

The Golden Lions would get the night started with a three-yard touchdown run by Donye Fuller (PAT no good). Burns would drive deep into Shelby territory on the ensuing drive, only to fumble the ball near the Shelby five-yard line. The Golden Lions would make them pay for it when quarterback Isaiah Bess hit Diavonni Daley for a 91-yard touchdown pass (PAT good). The Bulldogs would rumble back with a one-yard touchdown run by Cam’ron Sweezy (PAT good).

The second quarter would be a defensive battle. Shelby would be plagued with a fumble of their own. Austin Setzer would intercept a pass from Isaiah Bess in the end zone to keep Shelby from pulling away. But the Golden Lions defense would not let the Bulldogs capitalize.

In the second half, the Golden Lions picked up where they left off. Omar Phillips’ touchdown run from three yards out (PAT good) would give Shelby a 13-point lead once again. His four-yard run for a touchdown (PAT no good) would give Shelby their biggest lead of the night at 26-7. Burns was able to get another touchdown in not long after with another one-yard run by Cam’ron Sweezy. The two-point conversion would fail however. That would be as close as the Bulldogs got.

Cam’ron Sweezy had Burns’ two touchdown runs but Kujuan Pryor did most of the grunt work for Burns with 163 rushing yards. Isaiah Bess led Shelby’s offense with 211 passing yards and a touchdown, but was also intercepted once. Omar Phillips rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Malaki Hamrick registered two sacks and had a fumble recovery for Shelby. Santana Flack also had a sack for the Golden Lions. The Austin Setzer registered two takeaways for the Bulldogs, the interception that stopped a Shelby drive in the red zone and he recovered the Shelby fumble in the second quarter.

Major Injury: The game would come to a stop early in the fourth quarter when Burns TE/LB Dorien Starnes was injured. He had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. The game was stopped for several minutes before it resumed with 11:50 left.

What’s next? Burns travels to East Gaston. Shelby will have a bye week before hosting East Rutherford.
