Maiden Blue Devils Win a Double Overtime Thriller in thier 5th Straight Win over Newton-Conover On Senior Night Now Control Own Destiny For South Fork 2A #2 Seed

Friday night at Thomas E Brown Stadium. The annual battle of the devils looked to be a great one. This one would not disappoint. Both teams entered 6-3 and both was looking to win out where both controlled their own destiny for atleast a share of 2nd place in the South Fork 2A. As of late (according to Max Preps) Maiden has dominated this series this decade winning all but 2 games and 4 straight over Newton-Conover .

As the game got started both teams would go three and out. Unfortunately Newton-Conover punter Addison Hayes would botch the punt and Maiden would recover the ball at the one yard line. Next play Amarion Craig would run it in for a Blue Devils touchdown.(PAT blocked) Maiden leads 6 to 0 with 8:33 left in the 1st quarter. Newton-Conover would answer right back on less than a four minute drive. Newton-Conover’s Allen Wilfong would finish the drive on a 29 yard touchdown run (PAT good) Red Devils lead 7 to 6 with 4:58 left in the 1st quarter. The score would stay that way the rest of the 1st quarter.

Newton-Conover would extend it’s late early in the 2nd quarter as Justice Craig would hit Zane Redmond on a 10 yard pass (PAT good) Red Devils lead 14 to 6 with 7:20 left in the 2nd quarter. Maidens offense would sputter as they would go 3 and out throughout the 2nd quarter. Fortunately a spark on defense would spark the offense to tie the game before halftime. As Brennan James would pick off Justice Craig at the Maiden 39 yard line with 1:39 left in the 2nd quarter. Ethan Rhodes would finish the drive as he would hit Dylan Abernathy on a 9 yard great catch near me( 2 point conversation by Ethan Rhodes keeper ) We are tied at halftime at 14 all.

During halftime Former Maiden player and former Bunker Hill head coach Mike McRee had his jersey retired. The 14 all deadlock would stay that way. Both teams would have a chance to take the lead but wouldnt. Maidens best opportunity came near the top of the 4th quarter but Ethan Rhodes would fumble the ball near the 25 yard line with 10:25 to go in the 4th quarter. Newton-Conover had a chance to win it but a missed 41 yard field goal by Addison Hayes would be no good and this game would go into overtime.

Maiden would score first in the first overtime with a 6 yard run by Amarion Craig (PAT good) Maiden leads 21 to 14. Newton-Conover would answer back on a 3 yard touchdown run we are tied at 21. During the second overtime the game would be decided. Newton-Conover would score first on a 5 yard touchdown run by Allen Shade (PAT good) Red Devils lead 28 to 21. Maiden would need all four downs but Amarion Craig would score on a 3 yard touchdown run. Coach Will Byrne goes for 2 and the sophomore would be the hero on senior night as he runs in for the 2 point conversation and Maiden wins thier 5th straight over Newton-Conover 29 to 28 in double overtime.

With the win Maiden improves to (7-3) overall and (4-2) in the South Fork 2A can clinch the #2 seed out of the South Fork with a win over Lincolnton ( who fell to North Lincoln 49 to 7 Friday ) at Wolf Hollow next Friday (via tie breaker wins over East Lincoln and Newton-Conover). Newton-Conover falls to (6-4 ) overall and (4-2) in the South Fork 2A. Will host East Lincoln ( who hammered West Lincoln 63 to 35 Friday) next week and will need a win over East Lincoln and a Maiden lose to Lincolnton next week to get the #2 seed in the South Fork 2A.
