Huskies, Sloppy But Victorious

After their 36-29 loss at Crest last week, the Huskies conference title hopes took a little blow. But they are not completely out of the running. One thing the Huskies need to do to get back into it is to take care of business on their end. They would do just that as they would spoil Forestview’s homecoming with a 20-7 victory.

The Huskies would start fast. Set up by a Lamagea McDowell 55-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, McDowell would take it in for a touchdown two plays later from nine yards out. A two-point conversion pass from Zo Wallace to McDowell would give the Huskies an early 8-0 lead. The Jaguars would try to get a drive going of their own but would stall out and have to settle for a field-goal. The field-goal attempt was blocked however and James Seigle would return the ball 75-yards for another Husky touchdown. An unsportsmanlike penalty backed them up on the extra point try and they were unable to convert.

The game would turn sloppy from there as both teams were plagued with multiple penalties. The score remained 14-0 at the half in favor of Hunter Huss. The Huskies would extend their lead to 20-0 with two-yard run by Lamagea McDowell. The two-point conversion try would fail however. The Huskies would have the only turnover of the game. They would attempt a reverse play but it would be mishandled the Jaguars would recover the ball in Hunter Huss territory. But they would come up empty early in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars attempted another field goal that would be blocked by the Huskies.

Forestview would get on the scoreboard with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Graham Wiggins to Lamar Golightly. Holt Cloninger’s extra point was good. But the Huskies recovered the on-side kick and were able to run out the clock from there.

Lamagea McDowell led the Husky offense with 159 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Huskies amassed 346 yards of total offense. Forestview amassed 210 total yards of offense.

“Give them credit. They are tough down there when the field shrinks on you. They have a really good defense.” Forestview head coach Chris Medlin said of Hunter Huss “I’m proud of our effort. I’m proud of the way we played in the second half. When you get behind against a very good team, it’s tough to climb back up that hill. We kept fighting. That’s the main thing that we can build off of. We face another good team next week.”

“A win is a win. I don’t think we played up to par tonight. We got a lot of things that we need to correct come Monday.” said Hunter Huss head coach Jamar McKoy “There were a lot of penalties and in a rival game like this, you’ll get a lot of jaw-jacking back and forth. But that’s not Husky-style football and we’ll correct that also Monday.”

McKoy said about the offensive output “The offensive line blocked well. Zo managed the game well. We had some good runs by Lamagea being the big bulldozer that he is. We incorporated Malik Corry in the run game tonight pretty effectively. One thing that I’d like to see is less dancing dancing and little more sticking that toe in the ground, getting verticle from both of my backs. In that regard, we’re going to improve and we got some drills next week to improve that. But I’ll take the win as is.”

Forestview (5-4)(2-2) will travel to take on Kings Mountain next week. Hunter Huss (6-2)(3-1) will host Stuart Cramer.
