SOUTH
POINT CONTINUES DOMINANCE OF EAST GASTON WITH A 54-6 WIN

By: Anthony Perkins

Belmont
– South Point hosted their cross-town rivals on Friday evening, as the East Gaston
Warriors invaded Lineberger Stadium for the second week of Southwestern Conference
action.  You have to go back to 2006 and
1995 to find the last two times when East Gaston was victorious in this annual
battle.  So, why is such a one-sided affair
a rivalry.  Well, a lot of these kids are
kin to each other, some go to the same church and others have parents that
attended one of the two schools. In any event, both teams entered the game
looking for their first conference win of the season and the Warriors were
looking for their first win of the season.
South Point hasn’t fared much better this season as they entered the
game with a 2-4 record.  This night
however, belonged to the homestanding Red Raiders when they took control of the
game early on and never looked back.

The South Point offense was on the field for only three plays in the first quarter but they were most effective by scoring on two of the three plays.  On the first South Point play from scrimmage Devon King got to the edge on a sweep right and dashed 50 yards for the first South Point score.  Two and half minutes later, UNC commit Ray Rose, rumbled up the middle, breaking several tackles along the way to a 42-yard jaunt to give the Red Raiders a 14-0 first quarter score.

The Red
Raiders added three more scores in the second stanza with Rose scoring on runs
of 42 and 49 yards while holding down the quarterback position.  Fullback Hunter Hogue added the final points
of the first half on a one-yard dive play less than a minute before going into
the half.

In the third
quarter Hogue added his second score of the evening on a 31-yard run and King
added his second score of the contest on a 15-yard run to push the lead to 47-0
and forcing a running clock situation.

Both teams went to the benches in the final stanza and both teams added a score in the final quarter to round out the scoring.  East Gaston’s KJ Dagout (18 carries, 71 yards) put the Warriors on the board with a two-yard run and South Point’s Will Rhinehart added the final points of the game just before time ran out on a 20-yard run to make the final tally South Point 54, East Gaston 6.

South Point accumulated 432 rushing yards on 34 carries for the evening.  Rose collected 208 of those rushing yards on only 10 carries.  Rose also went 1-3 in the South Point aerial attack for 25 yards and the lone completion went to Devon King in the second quarter on a spectacular catch inside the East Gaston five.  South Point moved the chains 18 times and they were penalized four times for 35 yards.  The Red Raiders yardage for the contest totaled 457 yards and this was their first 400+ yard output for the year.

On the other side of the ball the visiting Warriors started out by dominating the clock in the first half but they just were not able to sustain and finish drives.  East Gaston finished up with 140 total yards, 102 yards rushing and 38 yards passing.  Quarterback Riley Dunlap completed three of five passes to account for the 38 passing yards.  The Warriors moved the chains nine times and they were penalized three times for 25 yards.  Both teams lost one fumble.

Next week the
Red Raiders will have a BYE and East Gaston will travel to RS Central.
