The original game of the week was Alexander Central at Hibriten but due area thunderstorms we found us a game in Catawba County a closer trip for week ones Carolina Varsity Catawba Valley Area game of the week. The Newton-Conover Red Devils as they hosted the Bears of Bunker Hill. The change of games must have worn on the Bears as last year's starter Desmond Anderson would not get the start due to unknown reasons and sophomore Carson Elder would get the start.
As the game got started Newton-Conover would on only need 8 seconds to score as Brandon Johnson would hit stride as he ran the ball over 60 yards for the Red Devil touchdown (2 point conversion failed). Red Devils lead 6 to 0 with 11:52 left in the 1st quarter. During Bunker Hill's they would start off positive but would go backward in negative yards on 1st and 2nd down. On 3rd down that's when the first of many mistakes would happen during the night. As the Bears wide receiver fumbled the ball and Brandon Johnson would get the ball and run it 34 yards for a Red Devil's touchdown (Pat is good) Newton-Conover leads 13 to 0 with 9:58 in the 1st quarter. 6 seconds later the game would receive a 40-minute lighting delay.
After the delay, there would no more delays for the rest of the night. After both teams started back both teams traded pints. During Bunker Hill's 2nd possession disaster would strike for the young sophomore QB Carson Elder as Brandon Johnson would pick 6 him and take it to the endzone ( 2 points good on a pass from Justice Craig to Keagan Covington) Red Devils lead 21 to 0 with 5:54 in the 1st quarter. There would be more scoring in the 1st.
Things would finally start going to positive for the Bears in the 2nd quarter. As Red Devil QB Justice Craig would be picked off by Markus Sigmon he would take it to the endzone on a pick 6 of 30 plus yards (Pat good) Red Devils lead cut to 21 to 7. Unfortunately, after the Bears TD it would mostly be all Red Devils rest of the game. As Brandon Johnson would take the ball on the kickoff to over midfield. Justice Craig would connect on a pass 4th down pass to keep the drive. Allen Willfong would finish the drive on a 6-yard touchdown run (2'pointer no good) Red Devils lead 27 to 7 with 5:34 in the 2nd quarter. Four minutes later Newton-Conover would extend their lead on a 15-yard pass from Justice Craig to Keagan Covington(Pat good) Red Devils lead 34 to 7 with 1 minute left in the 2nd quarter. That would be your halftime score.
Not much action in the 3rd quarter just a field goal by Addison Hayes to extend the Newton-Conover lead to 37 to 7 going into the 4th quarter. After struggling most of the game Carson Elder would finally show some promise as he would hit Hector Stamey on 49-yard pass for a touchdown ( Pat good) Red Devils now only lead 37 to 14 with 5:54 left in the game. Newton-Conover would answer right back as Justice Craig would throw a short pass to Keagan Covington for the final score of the night (Pat good). Red Devils win 44 to 14.
With the win, Newton-Conover improves to (1-0) on the season and has an open date next week before traveling to Hickory in 2 weeks. Bunker Hill falls to (0-1) and hosts St Stephens (who fell to Bandys Friday) next week.
