Yesterday, all eight West representative defeated their East counterparts in the NCHSAA state championship games. Here are the results:

1A: Robbinsville 45, Northampton 14

1AA: East Surry 56, Tarboro 28

2A: Reidsville 14, Northeastern 0

2AA: Shelby 34, Salisbury 0

3A: Charlotte Catholic 23, Southern Nash 7

3AA: Weddington 34, Lee County 14

4A: East Forsyth 24, Cardinal Gibbons 21

4AA: Vance 24, Leesville Road 3

As you will later see, 2019 was the first year when the West had a clean sweep of all 8 playoff classifications.

Starting in 2001, the 1A classification subdivided playoffs, creating 1A (smaller 1A schools) and 1AA (larger 1A schools). In 2002, the 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications followed suit. Here are the results between the East and the West for years 2001 through 2019:

2001 West 2, East 0 (East won the non-subdivided 2A and 3A, while the West won 4A, but not included in these figures)

2001-2019: West 93, East 53 (the West have won approximately 64% of all subdivided championships).

As you will see, the West have won at least half of the state championship games each year except for 2007 and 2012. The West have won at least 5 of the 8 championship games in 12 of these years.

Here are the breakdowns by classification, since each each classification subdivided for the playoffs:

1A: West 14, East 5

1AA: West 11, East 8

2A: West 11, East 7

2AA: West 12, East 6

3A: West 13, East 5

3AA: West 9, East 9

4A: West 9, East 9

4AA: West 14, East 4

Besides 3A and 3AA (the West and East both won 9 championships a piece in these playoff subdivisions), the West have won the majority of the championship games in each subdivided classification.

From 1A to 4AA, the West have clearly had the upper hand. Will this trend continue in future years?

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK-PERK’S PICKS FOR 1A THRU 3AA

I know this is late to post this but it’s not too late.  I’ve been laid up with a virus and I had this article ready to post since Wednesday but I kept forgetting it and I didn’t really feel like doing it. 

Good luck to all the teams, coaches and fans who have made it this far but unfortunately someone must lose even in the title game.  With that being said, here’s my picks for the state champs.

1A #1 Robbinsville vs #4 Northampton: Robbinsville by 14

1AA #1 East Surry vs #1 Tarboro: Tarboro by 7

2A #1 Reidsville vs #3 Northeastern: Reidsville by 6

2AA #1 Shelby vs #7 Salisbury: Shelby by 14

3A #5 Charlotte Catholic vs. #1 Southern Nash: Charlotte Catholic by 6

3AA #1 Weddington vs #1 Lee County: Weddington by 13

Looks like I am going to pick Weddington. The Warriors have a tougher defense (six shutouts, ten games having given up seven points or less, and only giving six points per game) than Lee County (two shutouts, eight games having given up seven points or less, and giving up an average of 11.5 points per game). Also, Weddington has played a tougher schedule and comes from a tougher conference (Southern Carolina 3A).

ROUND 4: Perk’s Picks for the Regional Finals of the 1A thru 3AA NCHS Football Playoffs

We have reached the fourth round of the playoffs and with it the 2019 football season is rapidly coming to a conclusion.  Last week in the third round of the 1A and 1AA pairings I picked 4 out of 4 winners.  Three of the winners covered the spread and the Robbinsville/Murphy game was within one point. 

In the 2A & 2AA brackets I picked 3 out of 4 winners with two of the three winners covering the spread. The Shelby/W. Lincoln game was on the nose and the Burns/N. Lincoln game was within two points.

Over in the 3A & 3AA brackets I also picked 4 out of 4 winners where three of the four covered the spread however none were within ten points.

Last week’s totals were 11 correct picks out of 12 games for the 1A thru 3AA classifications.  For all three rounds of the playoffs I have picked correctly 62 out of 76 winners for an 82% accuracy rating.
