Clover Strikes Early, Often, Rolls Ashbrook 52-0

The Clover Blue Eagles came out fast and furious, scoring at will in the first half at William Eccles Field. On Clover’s first drive, Gabe Carroll connected with Jaylin Lane for a 48-yard touchdown pass (PAT good). Carroll would connect with Zacc Davis for a 31-yard touchdown pass (PAT good) and with Blackmon Huckabee for a 21-yard touchdown pass. After the Blue Eagles blocked a punt late in the first quarter, they would put another score on the board. Clover lined up in the Power-I package and defensive end/fullback Zae Witherspoon took it in for a five yard touchdown run (PAT good).

The second quarter was more of the Carroll/Lane show as those two connected for two more touchdowns (22 yards and 5 yards). Ashbrook did a appear to find a little life midway through the second quarter as Kendall Massey got the Green Wave their first 1st down. Just to avoid a shutout, the Green Wave would line up for 40-yard field goal try by Bailey Wilcox. But it would sail just short. However Ashbrook would force Clover to punt for the first time on the ensuing drive and the Green Wave offense was able to make a deep run into Blue Eagle territory. A 60-yard run by Trevon Crank set Ashbrook up at the Blue Eagles 18-yard line.

But things looked like they were going from bad to worst for Ashbrook at the end of the second quarter when Clover’s Chance Mackey picked off a half-back pass from Kendall Massey and took it 98 yards for a touchdown. But an illegal block would wipe the score off the board. It would remain 42-0 at half-time and the second half would see a continuous running clock. Kicker Christian Erwin got the only points in the third quarter with a 44-yard field-goal. In the fourth quarter, back-up quarterback Cory Adams connected with Darius Bowser for 16-yard touchdown pass (PAT good). Erwin was 7-for-7 on his extra point kicks.

That would make the final 52-0. Gabe Carroll passed for 199 yards and five touchdowns on the night. BJ Tims rushed for 124 yards.

Clover (4-0) will have a bye week before traveling to Irmo. Ashbrook (0-3) travels to Watauga next week.

“They did a great job tonight. Defense played well. Offense did a good job there and I was able to get a bunch of backups in.” said Clover head coach Brian Lane “Those guys (Carroll and Lane) got great chemistry. They do a good job. They’ve been working hard all summer. They did a great job distributing the ball. I think we had 6 different guys catch a touchdown pass tonight. David Hall went down early in the game. When he went down early, BJ Tims came in and did a good job there for us. It was a great team effort.”

“All of them did great on defense.” Lane added “All the way from Hayden Johnson, Jaylon Ballard Jacquarius Guinn and Rhyan Cheatham had two pass break-ups there. So those guys have been doing really well.”

“We had some chances to stop them on defense. I’m really disappointed we allowed them to score that many points. We’re going to regroup and get ready for Watauga.” said Ashbrook head coach Brian Andrews. “We worked on that.” Andrews said regarding cutting down on penalties from last week to this week “We worked on a lot of things with our mental toughness and our discipline. I was disappointed with 17 penalties. I think we had five tonight. Two of them were unsportsmanlike which was unacceptable and we’ll adjust that. But we got a lot of work to do heading to Watauga.”
