Chargers Secure Share Of Conference Title With Shutout Win Over North Gaston

Anybody who wondering if Crest was going to have a letdown after their big 36-29 win over Hunter Huss last week got that question answered quickly. The Chargers raced out to a 29-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

A ten-yard touchdown pass from DJ Fuller to TJ Ruff got the night started (PAT good). Jalin Graham scored two first quarter touchdowns for the Chargers (30, 14). One of the PAT’s was a two point conversion pass from Eli Brooks to Carter Greene.

The North Gaston Wildcats were able to get a drive going in the second quarter but would be stymied at the Crest 28 yard line. The Chargers would get another touchdown on the board before half-time. TJ Ruff’s 25-yard touchdown run (PAT good) put the Chargers up 29-0 at half-time.

In the second half, TJ Ruff’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Keyez Jefferies (PAT good) and Deuntae Jackson’s two-yard touchdown run following a blocked punt put the nail in the coffin. Blake Roderick was 5-for-5 on extra point kicks. With the score 43-0, the fourth quarter would see a continuous running clock. The Wildcats did drive into Crest territory but an intentional grounding call backed them up and they would not be able to recover. The Chargers keep the shutout.

“It was a shorter week for us playing on Thursday. Our kids did a great job coming out. It wasn’t the cleanest game but we did well enough to get the shutout. I’m proud of that.” said Crest head coach Nick Eddins “Only undefeated team left in the conference with one game left to go, you can’t be any better than that.”

When asked about the bye week coming up, Eddins said “Much needed! We played ten straight games. There were no easy ones in that stretch. So our kids deserve a break and to catch their breath and to get some guys healed up.”

“I think our kids competed. They didn’t make plays when we needed to all the time. But they played hard.” said North Gaston head coach Mike Patton “We had some plays that we made defensively. We drove the ball one time and had something going but it stalled out. I’m proud of the kids coming back week after week. We’re playing a lot of young guys. A lot of sophomores are getting a lot of playing time. Very few seniors in this crowd. These guys are getting valuable experience. Hopefully, that’s going to pay off for next year.”

The Chargers (8-2)(5-0) clinch a share of the conference title. But they can win it outright in two weeks if they can knock off Kings Mountain (8-1)(3-1) when they host the Mountaineers. North Gaston (1-8)(0-5) will travel to play Ashbrook (0-7)(0-4).
