Four Former Area Standouts Among Those Participating in Super Bowl XLVI

The New England Patriots and the New York Giants are set to play the biggest game of the year – the Super Bowl. Four people of local interest are New York Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks (Independence 2007), defensive tackle Chris Canty (Charlotte Latin 2000), New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes (Crest 2006) and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell (South Point 1980).

None of these men are strangers to the big game. Fewell helped South Point win the state title in 1979. Nicks played a part in Independence’s 109 game winning streak. The Patriots won state titles from 2000-2006. 2006 was Nicks’s last year with Independence. Canty helped Latin to the NCISAA championship game in 1999. Spikes helped Crest to two state titles.

Nicks had his biggest game of the season in the NFC divisional round. He accounted for 165 receiving yards and two touchdowns against the Packers in their 37-20 victory at Lambeau Field. Spikes had a big highlight came in New England’s AFC Championship victory over Baltimore when he picked off Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco in the fourth quarter.  That play helped preserve the Patriots 23-20 victory.

Fewell's defense had their ups and downs throughout the regular season, but really came alive in the playoffs. They held Atlanta's offense scoreless. The Falcons' only score was a safety. They also forced four turnovers against the Packers the following week and held Green Bay to a season low 20 points.

Now these four have a chance to shine in the big spotlight again as they take part in Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM ET.
