Charlotte Catholic continues to make believers out of unbelievers with yet another impressive victory Friday night. The Cougars improved to 18-4 overall after defeating Phillip O. Berry, 81-76, for the second time this season.
Catholic may not be great in a lot of areas, but one thing they do well is put the ball in the basket. The Cougars stepped onto the court with a game plan and executed it very well. The Cougars did not a run a high amount of screens like they normally do, instead opting to work the ball into the post early and often; making sure to take advantage of the size advantage they had over the smaller Cardinals. Catholic continually grabbed rebounds on the offensive and defensive ends, dived after loose balls, made precision passes and took care of the basketball.
As for Berry, the Cardinals will need to figure out how to pull themselves together when things start falling apart on the floor. At halftime, Berry was down six. Midway through the 3rd quarter, the Catholic lead ballooned to 21. Berry did not turn it back on again until 5 minutes to go in the 4th when they got into “hurry-up offense” mode. But time was not on their side and the lead was just too great to overcome. Berry just could not get within arm’s length of a scrappy Catholic team.
With only 2 spots for the 3A playoffs in this conference, it looks like Harding and Catholic will fill those openings. I do like Catholic’s chances to make somewhat of a spurt in the playoffs. I get the feeling that there will be some teams who will not take them serious and Catholic has proven that if you don’t show up with you’re A+ game, they will beat you.
