Big 4th Quarter Lifts West Charlotte Over Ardrey Kell

Charlotte, NC  March 5, 2019  It's been a tough 2-3 days leading up to the West Charlotte vs Ardrey Kell boy's quarterfinal high school basketball game.  A venue change, a racially charged social media post, fake social media posts, a star player suspended and many questions about what is driving the decisions.   There were accusations about why the game was being moved from West Charlotte's home court, but we after an official statement from teh NCHSAA, we know for sure that the game was moved due to "seats" and capacity issues at West Charlotte's gym.    Even after the game was moved, they still needed more seats.   Z.B. Vance High School hosted the big game with tons of support from West Charlotte, Top CMS Officials, and CMPD.   Over 1,000 fans made into the gym at Vance, and hundreds more were turned away from the sold out event.  At least 90% of the fans were wearing West Charlotte burgundy and gold.   Media members were packed in tight all the way around the court,  filling almost every inch of the baseline.   This is how all high school playoff games should feel, with the obvious exception being the high profile back stories that transpired over the past few days.   It was an extremely well run event without incident.  In the end, it was all about basketball, and the game definitely did not disappoint.

West Charlotte is "tall and long" and plays that way around the basket.  West Charlotte's 6'8" Senior Forward, Patrick Williams made his prescence know early.  Williams backed down 2 Ardrey Kell players and then with a quick jump and turn slammed it home igniting the West Charlotte faithful in one of the first Lion's possessions.  The game was back and forth for three quarters, with the lead for either team never reaching more than 6 or 7 points.   Visting Ardey Kell played tough making several key 3 pointers, and forcing turnovers to keep pace with the Lions.  The box score reads exactly how the game played out.  A single point margin every quarter, except the 4th where West Charlotte outscored Ardrey Kell 21-7.
