Posted: November 17, 2018
When a game on paper looks even sometimes it maybe misleading. That would be the case for the 2AA West 1st Round playoff matchup. As the Knights of North Lincoln welcomed the Mustangs of Smokey Mountain to the Dungeon. Both teams finished 2nd place in the South Fork 2A and Mountain 6 2A and both had 8-3 overall records. This was the 1st home playoff game since 2007 (When the Knights defeated the Bandys Trojans 38 to 34 with a last second kickoff return to win the game)
As the game got started the Mustangs got a 1st down. But that's when the Mustangs fumbled the ball and it was recovered by North Lincoln's Will Painter with 10:38 left in the 1st quarter. That's when Jake Soorus broke a 30 yard touchdown run a minute later. (PAT good) Knights lead 7 to 0 with 9:11 left in the 1st quarter. Less than a minute later things would start to unravel for Smokey Mountain fast as Jacob Cline would intercept James Hinson at the 30 yard line with 8:28 left in the 1st quarter. The Knights would move the ball but 3 minutes later they would face a 4th down. But Landon Beard would run a qb keeper of 11 yards for a touchdown (PAT good) to put the Knights up 14 to 0 with 5:09 left in the 1st quarter. Meanwhile things got from bad to worse for Smokey Mountain as dejavu would happen as James Hinson would be picked off by Jacob Cline again. But this time he would take it 50 plus yards to the house . (PAT good ) Knights lead 21 to 0 with 3:26 left in the 1st quarter. After a Mustangs 3 and out. Jake Soorus would get a big gain near the end of the 1st quarter to put the Knights in scoring possession again. As the Knights of North Lincoln lead 21 to 0 after one.
As we began the 2nd quarter Future West Point Army Black Knight Clayton Crib would blow the game wide open with a 1 yard touchdown run (PAT good) Knights lead 28 to 0 with 11:55 left in the 2nd quarter. The Mustangs then look like they were putting a long drive together but for the 3rd time in a row James Hinson would be picked off by Jacob Cline again with 8:51 left in the 2nd quarter. That's when the Knights went on a long drive. The Knights would finish the drive on a Landon Beard to Sam Brady touchdown pass (PAT good) Knights lead 35 to 0 with 2:35 left in 2nd quarter. Smokey Mountain would finally answer as Jacob Hinson would connect a long 51 yard touchdown pass of his own to Cody Lominac (PAT blocked) Knights lead 35 to 6 at halftime.
As the 3rd quarter began the Knights would begin to milk clock and the drive would stall. That is when North Lincoln would chose to a attempt a field goal. But this time it wouldnt go in the Knights favor as the kick would be no good with 6:59 left in 3rd quarter. The Mustangs look to score again but Jacob Hinson would be picked off by Daniel Carter with 3:21 left in the 3rd quarter. Then a unsportsmanlike conduct got the Knights in scoring possession again. And as the near the end of the 3rd quarter approached. Ty Williams would finish the drive on 8 yard touchdown run (PAT good) Knights lead 42 to 6. No other action would happen in the 4th quarter sides Jacob Cline's 4th interception.
With the win North Lincoln improves to 9-3 overall and will surprisingly to some host #16 seed and county rival East Lincoln in the 2nd Round (Who stunned #1 seed Pisgah 13 to 10). Smokey Mountain ends their season at 8-4 and look forward to next season as they look to be contenders in the Mountain 6 as they lose only a handful of seniors to graduation.
