Last year we profiled a ton of players in a series of midseason videos called "Pepman's Players" and they were all deserving of some publication for the hard work they did for their teams, but didn't always receive the public spotlight. This year we hopefully will be able to do that once again, but for this player I wanted to highlight someone deserving that is way off of the typical path we all cover.
There are a lot of schools out here that play football and you never hear much about them. Carolina Pride is a program led by Coach Mallows that is put together with players that are homeschooled, private schooled, or attend traditional schools but don't have the opportunity to play. The Pride are an independent team and have played known privates such as Charlotte Latin, Charlotte Country Day, and Statesville Christian this season among others.
The Pride's Quarterback is Wanyae Freeman, a very talented junior who has led the Pride to a 4-5 record this year and has piled up some big numbers this season with over 20 touchdowns and over 1000 yards passing on the season. We recently spoke with Wanyae about his performance and about himself and the Pride this season:
Q: What do you like most about playing for Carolina Pride and what made you choose this option?
A: "The thing I like most about Carolina Pride is that it's it just a family; it feels like home & what made me choose Carolina Pride was God; I asked God to lead me in the direction & God lead me there. He’s doing great things for me right now."
Q: How would you describe your game as a QB, are you more of a dropback passer or a dual-threat kind of player?
A: "I’m definitely a dual-threat quarterback; I can run if I have to but also I can throw the deep ball. I’m over 1,000 yards passing for the season but I just thank the man up top for everything so far this season."
Q: .Who would you like to thank for your success so far as a player?
A: "First I want to thank the man up top because without Him I wouldn’t be the man I am now ,I just give Him the glory. I want to thank my dad for always being on me, my brother Walt I look up to him, and my youth coaches Marlon and Kim-aid."
Q: You are a junior, what are your goals as you end this season and head into your senior year?
A: "My goals for this season are to finish strong and try to finish with 30 touchdowns overall; I have 25 touchdowns right now. Going into my senior year I just want to make it the best that I can and just continue to let God be the glory."
Q: What has been your best memory so far in your high school football playing career?
A: "The best memory so far in high school is throwing for over 300 yards in a game, getting the win and just being the seen as the team leader of the Carolina Pride. We are a family and it's not just about me, I give the memory and credit to everybody on my team and my coaches."
Carolina Pride finishes their season this week with a home game against the Sandhills Titans on Friday Night at 7:30 pm. We wish Wanyae and the Pride the best of luck!
