Weddington Defeats Ardrey Kell 34-16

Ardrey Kell has opened the season against the Union County Weddington Warriors for 13 straight years.   Match-up 13 ended with the Weddington Warriors taking the W 34-16.   Going back to 2006 the head to head record advantage is Weddington 9-4.   Ardrey Kell opened season 2 for head coach Kyle Brey at home in front of a nice crowd with full student sections on both sides.  Great turnout considering the start of the school year is more than a week away.

In general, the story of the night was Ardrey Kell struggling on offense and an AK special teams let down to start the second half.  The first half was almost all Weddington but AK did manage to sustain a couple of possisions and convert a long FG.  Half time score was 13-3 Weddington and although it appeared Weddington had missed more opportunities, the Knights were still in it.  The game turned quickly when Weddington's Shipley(#16) returned the 2nd half kick-off for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 17 points, putting the Warriors up 20-3.  Up until that key special teams play, I felt like AK's Defense had managed to keep them in the game against a potent Weddington offense.  After the returned kick-off for a TD, the Knights offense was up against the wall and needed to answer.  Unfortunately, Ardrey Kell couldn't move the ball against a rested and well disciplned Weddington defense and were forced to punt.  Weddington's offense then took over and marched down the field.  Weddington scored on a half back pop-pass to a wide open Shipley(#16) making the score 27-3. Right after the score, lightning was spotted in the area and the game was suspended.  The game resumed about 45 mins later.

Ardrey Kell's defense forced two first half turnovers, and held Weddinton to two field goals and a TD.    Weddington's D forced a turnover deep in AK territory by sacking Ardrey Kell's QB, however the Ardrey Kell defense held the Warriors out of the end zone.  Weddington did score on a nice field goal by a talented Weddington kicker.  (All kick-offs were touchbacks and the Weddington FG unit was on point.  He's good for 50 yards...easy...)

Weddington is a talented football team who returned a great deal of players from last year.  I was not surprised to see the Weddington offense clicking right out of the gate on game 1.  They have a bunch of skill players that play on both sides of the ball that should make for a successful season.   Weddington has next Friday 8/24 off, and will return to action on 8/31 for their home opener where they will take on Porter Ridge.  Porter Ridge beat Cuthbertson, at Cuthbertson last night 8/17, 56 - 35.  Quite a bit of offense in that one.

Ardrey Kell is starting many new players on offense and defense it takes time to develop some rhythm.  Aside from a few big plays the Knights played a good game against a good team.  Next week things don't get any easier for the Knights who will travel to Myers Park.  The Knights will need to find a way to keep the talented Myers Park offense off the field.  That starts with being more successful on first downs and finding a way to convert on a few more 3rd downs.   8/24 will be Myers Park's home opener and they also are returning many skill players.  Myers Park beat Olympic 35-0.
