PERK’S PICKS FOR WEEK 9 OF THE 2017 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
Predictions for the Southern Piedmont, South Fork, Southwestern and Big South Conferences
Last week I predicted 12 out of 15 winners for an 80% average. Through the first seven weeks I’ve picked 112 of 142 winners for a 79% average. My maximum point differential is 40 points even if I think a team will win by more than 40 (my ‘mercy rule’). Overall records are listed first and conference records are listed second.
2017 SOUTHERN PIEDMONT 1A
Bessemer City and Thomas Jefferson Academy have clearly established themselves as the top tier teams in the Southern Piedmont. Although the Yellow Jackets had a close call against Union Academy last week, in the end it was their defense that made the difference and that’s a good thing. Mountain Island Charter and Union Academy are two addition teams to watch in this conference. Either one of these two teams are capable of pulling off an upset against the top two before the season is over.
Bessemer City (7-0, 3-0) Pine Lake Prep (3-4, 1-2): Bessemer City by 14.
Cherryville (2-5, 0-3) at Union Academy (4-3, 1-2): Union Academy by 21.
Mountain Island Charter (5-2, 2-1) at Community School of Davidson (3-3, 2-1): MIC by 15.
Thomas Jefferson (7-0, 3-0) at Highland Tech (2-5, 0-3): Thomas Jefferson by 40.
2017 SOUTH FORK 2A
In the South Fork Conference Maiden, Newton-Conover and East Lincoln are all knotted up at the top spot and I look for them to hold their position through this week. The Lincolnton/West Lincoln game looks to be the most competitive contest in the South Fork this week. Lincolnton is coming off an impressive win against Bandys while West Lincoln took it on the chin against a powerful Newton-Conover team last week. With both teams already having two conference losses, this is a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Bandys (2-5, 0-3) at East Lincoln (4-3, 3-0): East Lincoln by 20.
Lincolnton (2-5, 1-2) at West Lincoln (3-4, 1-2): West Lincoln by 1.
Maiden (7-0, 3-0) at North Lincoln (2-5, 1-2): Maiden by 19.
Newton-Conover (6-1, 3-0) at Lake Norman Charter (3-4, 0-3): Newton-Conover by 40.
2017 SOUTHWESTERN 2A
The Southwestern Conference is arguably the most clearly defined conference in the state. You have two top tier teams, one middle of the road team and three teams that are definite underdogs against everyone except when those three are playing each other – that was clearly evidenced in last week’s three blowouts. Two of the lower tier teams will face each other this week when Chase travels to East Gaston and it should be an exciting contest against two evenly matched teams. East Rutherford travels to South Point to revive a series that dates back to 1969 but has been inactive for the past 16 years after conferences were realigned for the 2001 season. South Point leads the series 19-9 but 10 of those games were decided by less than 14 points. This could be another one of those kinds of games.
Chase (1-6, 0-1) at East Gaston (1-6, 0-1): East Gaston by 8.
East Rutherford (5-2, 1-0) at South Point (7-0, 1-0): South Point by 28.
R-S Central (3-4, 0-1) at Shelby (6-1, 1-0): Shelby by 40.
2017 BIG SOUTH 3A
Crest and Kings Mountain have established their spots at the top with 3-0 conference records and that they are the teams to beat if you are going to win the Big South Conference this year. It is fitting that they will not meet until the season finale in November. Huss could make things interesting if they can pull off an upset against the Chargers this week and Kings Mountain better not napping on Ashbrook if the Greenwave brings their “A” game. Food for thought: If (a BIG “IF”) both Huss and Ashbrook can pull off a win this week there would be a four-way tie for first place in the Big South.
Burns (1-6, 0-3) at Forestview (2-5, 1-2): Forestview by 7.
Hunter Huss (4-3, 2-1) at Crest (5-2, 3-0): Crest by 17.
Kings Mountain (6-1, 3-0) at Ashbrook (3-4, 2-1): Kings Mountain by 17.
North Gaston (2-6, 0-3) at Stuart Cramer (4-3, 1-2): Stuart Cramer by 8.
