Summer Visit With The Garinger Wildcats

On a nice summer evening I visited with Head Coach Jeff Caldwell and the Garinger Wildcats who were practicing in their stadium. I saw about 45 kids working hard on learning the schemes and rotating through multiple positions on both offense and defense. Every rep I saw coaches talking to players, which is always a good sign. Players were going hard on every play and supporting each other and there was nothing negative ever said if a player failed to do something correctly, there was plenty of positive reinforcement.

Speaking during practice with their new defensive coordinator, the defense wants to play fast and focus on the fundamentals. They are already focusing on tackling with tackling circuits and making sure to emphasize playing physical football. There also is a nice passion from this staff about showing love for the kids and being more than just a coach for them.

Coach Caldwell wanted me to give a special shout out to athletic director Tony Huggins, who he says has been a great asset to the program and has made sure they have had everything they needed every step of the way. This was great to hear as we know in the past support has been an issue here.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the young lady - Destiny - who is the student trainer/assistant for Garinger. She has a 3.6 GPA, performs with the marching band, and aspires to go to Spellman in college. She was working hard and spoke so much about the difference in the team between last year and this year. A well spoken young lady that will go far in life.

Please enjoy the interviews below that we had with Coach Caldwell, Junior ATH Jalen Moore, Junior WR Tyreese Wilkes, Senior WR/SS Delvin Clement, and Junior WR/CB Malcolm Bailey.
