After a Week 1 loss to Summerville High School, Providence has won 3 in a row, with their latest victory coming over their South Charlotte rival Myers Park. Severe weather across the Charlotte region on Friday forced several games to be postponed until Monday 9/15, and the Providence – Myers Park game was one of the victims.
When play resumed on Monday night, Providence wasted no time putting up 27 points in the first half. Providence led several nice drives, controlling the ball and all of the momentum for the first half. The Providence defense held Myers Park scoreless and they led 27-0 at the half.
The second half was nearly the reverse of the first half. Myers Park scored 20 second half points and the Myers Park defense found their swagger and kept Providence scoreless. A big part of the Myers Park success was shutting down the run and keeping the Panthers behind in down and distance. Myers Park had several scoring opportunities in the 4th quarter but the Providence defense found a way to keep the Mustangs stabled.
Late 4th quarter, just after a Myers Park touchdown closed the gap to 27-20, Providence found themselves facing a long 3rd and 8 on about their own 35 yard line. On the 3rd down play, the Providence coaching staff took a page out of the Riverboat Ron playbook and what appeared to be a "stretch run" turned into a swing pass that found a wide open Providence Panther for the first down. (Originally I thought that there was a pitch to a RB) Thanks for the comment/correction) Providence was able to basically take a knee to close out the final 2 minutes of the game.
Providence is now 3-1 and has a bye week this Friday 9/19.
Myers Park has lost 3 in a row, now 1-3 and will host North Mecklenburg this Friday Night.
