After beating Myers Park on the road to even their record 1-1, Ardrey Kell traveled the short trip to face nearby rival Marvin Ridge in Week 3. Marvin Ridge lost a high scoring game to West Montgomery in Week 1, 35-31 and was idle for Week 2.
Looking for their first win of the season and their first win in 2 years against Ardrey Kell, Marvin Ridge won the toss and deferred to the second half, electing to put their defense on the field first. On the opening series, the Marvin Ridge defense held strong, and forced an Ardrey Kell punt. After getting the ball in good field position, Marvin Ridge was unable to move the ball or get into field goal range against the tough AK defense. Later in the first, Ardrey Kell found the end zone on a long run up the middle for the game’s first score. At the 3:46 mark in the first quarter, lightning was spotted, and the game was suspended for about 45 minutes. The entire field and stadium were both cleared and fans were asked to go to their vehicles or under the bleachers.
After play resumed at about 8:45, AK struck again, this time finding the end zone on a smooth pass play for about 30 yards. That score put AK up 14-0 which remained unchanged through the end of the first half. During the 2nd Quarter, AK turned back 2 good drives by Marvin Ridge, one of which was inside the AK 10 yard line, where the AK defense held string on 4th and 3. Marvin Ridge had difficulty all night running the football between the tackles.
During the second half, Marvin Ridge finally found the end zone on an amazing 4th and long pass play. After scrambling right across the long side of the field, the Marvin Ridge QB threw a nice ball to a wide open receiver in the right corner of the end zone. Point after attempt was blocked.
Later in the 3rd, after an AK player couldn’t handle a Marvin Ridge punt, MR took over inside the AK 25 yard line. A few plays later Marvin Ridge scored on a pass play into the left corner of three end zone. 2 PT conversion attempt failed. AK 14 – MR 12
After the MR score AK immediately answered with a near 70 yard drive for a Touchdown, and PAT, making the score AK 21 – MR 12
Marvin Ridge moved the ball well later in the 4th QTR and the MR kicker put a 40 yd field goal right down the middle to make the score AK 21 – MR 15. The 40 yd field goal by the MR kicker would have been good from at least 45 yards…maybe even close to 50.
AK got the ball back with about 4 mins remaining, looking to close out the game and run out the clock. After a couple of first downs, AK faced a 4th and short at the MR 35 yard line. On the 4th down play, the AK running back made plenty of forward progress to pick up the first down, but fumbled the ball after being hit by 3 Marvin Ridge defenders. MR recovered on about their own 35 yard line.
With about 2 and half mins remaining in the game, Marvin Ridge put together several nice sideline pass plays and picked up a couple of first downs, ultimately moving the ball to about the AK 25 before facing a do or die forth down. On 4th and about 4, the Marvin Ridge QB was forced out of the pocket and scrambled desperately to the first down marker, but he was forced out of bounds by 3 AK defenders a couple yards short of the first down.
AK took over with about a minute remaining (Victory formation). One seriously good football game on both sides of the ball for both teams. Marvin Ridge refused to go away, showed a ton of heart and fought hard to the bitter end. From my perspective, the AK defense plays tough football, and they showed up big for the second week in a row when the game was on the line. Game Ball goes to the AK defense.
