NCHSAA Round 3 Playoff Bracket Breakdowns for

2A and 2AA Teams

By: Anthony Perkins

All of the #1 seed teams in the 2Aand 2AA western brackets have been eliminated and the remaining teams in the 1A brackets are a #2, #4, #6 and #9 seed. In the 2AA western brackets a #2, #3, #5 and #16 seed are still in action. Last week I was 6-2 in the 2A-2AA brackets with big upset wins in the Carver-Lincolnton and the Forest Hills-Parkwood games.  Here’s my shot at round three matchups.

The two teams that will decide the winner of the quadrant three bracket of the 2A playoffs are the number four seed Reidsville Rams and number nine seed Lincolnton Wolves. After defeating number one seed Carver last week, Lincolnton will face an equally impressive opponent this week in the Reidsville Rams who are posting 37 points per game and while giving up only 15.  The Wolves may have to use their monstrous defensive tackle Darian Roseboro as an offensive threat if they are to pull off another upset.  If the Lincolnton defense can keep it close they have a legitimate chance to advance but I’ll go with the Rams.  Reidsville by 10.

The two teams that will decide the winner of the quadrant four bracket of the 2A playoffs are the number two seed North Rowan Cavaliers and number six seed Shelby Golden Lions. This game features two teams that are both averaging 39 points per game with North Rowan holding a 30 yards per game advantage in offensive output.  The Cavaliers also hold a slight defensive edge by allowing 10 fewer points per game than the Golden Lions.  Players to watch are Shelby’s quarterback RJ George who has accumulated nearly 2700 yards this year through the air and North Rowan running back Jareke Chambers who has rushed for over 1900 yards this year.  This is shaping up as an offensive shoot out and the team that makes a critical stop near the end will most likely be the one playing next week.  North Rowan by 3.

The two teams that will decide the winner of the quadrant three bracket of the 2AA playoffs are the number five seed Hunter Huss Huskies and number sixteen seed Parkwood Rebels. Some have said that this bracket has two Cinderella’s but that is certainly debatable.  The Huskies are members of the Big South 2A/3A Conference but only two teams in that conference are 2A.  Conference opponents Forestview and South Point are still in contention in the 3A brackets and the Huskies defeated Forestview and took South Point to overtime.  With their victory over Forest Hills last week the Parkwood Rebels are one of several teams that have already proven how difficult it is to defeat the same team twice in the same year and that victory came a week after taking out number one seed Franklin. Hunter Huss’ multi-talented Kerrion Moore is the player to watch in this game because he is such a difference maker.  Only a few teams have found a way to contain Moore and that was early in the season.   Hunter Huss by 10.

The two teams that will decide the winner of the quadrant four bracket of the 2AA playoffs are the number two seed Monroe Redhawks and number three seed East Lincoln Mustangs.  This #2 verses #3 matchup has two teams that are as evenly matched as you will ever find.  The Mustangs average two more points per game than the Redhawks  and Monroe gives up two points less per game than East Lincoln.  On the field both teams have identical 11-2 records but East Lincoln had to forfeit two wins resulting in a 9-4 record.  The Mustangs have cruised through the first two rounds of the playoffs but they will face competition that should be on an equal level this week.  Quarterback Chazz Surratt and the fact that the Mustangs are the defending state champs gives them the edge.  East Lincoln by 7.
