ROUND 3 1A/1AA WESTERN BRACKET PREDICTIONS

NCHSAA Round 3 Playoff Bracket Breakdowns for

1A and 1AA Teams

By: Anthony Perkins

The 1A western brackets have two #1 seeds along with a #3 and a #7 seed still in competition. The 1AA western brackets have 2 #1 seeds along with one #2 and one #3 seed. Last week I was 7-1 in the 1A-1AA brackets with a miss on the Mount Airy-East Surry game.  Here’s my  picks for round three.

The two teams that will decide the winner of quadrant three of the 1A playoff bracket are the number one seed Albemarle Bulldogs and number three seed South Robeson Mustangs.  The Albemarle offense is averaging 378 yards and45 points per game and their defense is surrendering less than 20 points per game.  The South Robeson offense is less productive at 318 yards and 27 points per game.  Players to watch for the Bulldogs are quarterback Bryan Blanton who has passed for over 2000 yards with a completion rate near 50% and in 185 attempts he has tossed only 8 interceptions.  Kevin McKinney is their premier running back with just under 100 yards per game.  The key Mustang player to watch is fullback Andrew Hill who is knocking down over 140 yards per game.  Albemarle by 10.

The two teams that will decide the winner of quadrant four of the 1A playoff bracket are the number one seed Murphy Bulldogs and number seven seed Hayesville Yellow Jackets.  Murphy looks like the superior team in this matchup with an offensive output of 406 yards and 43 points per game compared to Hayesville’s 241 yards and 21 points per game.  Both teams are giving up a shade over 21 points per game. Keep an eye on Murphy’s standout running back Kenton Braswell, he is averaging over 11 yards every time he touches the ball and quarterback Dalton Kent who has accumulated over 1200 passing yards with a 57% completion rate and only 3 picks in 127 attempts.  The big cog in the Yellow Jacket offense is quarterback Isaac Mills with over 1000 total yards and a completion rate of 47%.  Murphy has the ability to control the game with their stronger rushing attack and Hayesville has a tendency to turn the ball over more frequently.  Turnovers kill, especially in the playoffs!  Murphy by 14.

The two teams that will decide the winner of quadrant four of the 1AA playoff bracket are the number one seed West Montgomery Warriors and number three seed East Surry Cardinals.  The run oriented Warrior offense is posting 462 total yards and 49 points per game compared to the Cardinals 264 yards and27 points per game.  Keep an eye on West Montgomery quarterback Caleb Drake who is averaging 229 yards per game (121 passing, 108 rushing), and running back Suave Pegues (124 yards per game); quarterback Lucas Koons is the major threat and the leading point producer for East Surry.   West Montgomery by 17.

The two teams that will decide the winner of quadrant four of the 1AA playoff bracket are the number one seed Swain County Maroon Devils and number two seed Starmount Rams. Statistically these two teams match up very well with the Swain County offense averaging about 70 more yards and 8 points per game and a defense that is giving up 7 fewer points per game than Starmount.  They faced at least one common opponent in East Wilkes with Swain County winning 56-31 on November 15 and Starmount winning 55-7 on October 25.  The Maroon Devils advantage will be quarterback Ray Smith with over 2900 yards passing and nearly 800 yards rushing along with running back Spencer McCoy and his 1300 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns.  Running back Will Simpson is the main threat for the Rams and he should reach the 1000 yard mark for the season this week.  Swain County by 7.
