WEEK 8 GAMES: BIG SOUTH & GASTON CO.

WEEK 8 PREDICTIONS FOR THE BIG SOUTH & OTHER GASTON CO. SCHOOLS

By: Anthony Perkins

ASHBROOK at SOUTH POINT

Ashbrook put on an impressive performance in last week’s 35-14 win over previously undefeated North Gaston while the Red Raiders put on an equally unimpressive performance against an inferior Hunter Huss team.  The big question for this week is which Red Raider team will show up; will it be the number 2 ranked team in 3A or the team that thinks they just have to show up to win.  If the #2 ranked team shows up it’s a Red Raider win and the regular season win streak that now stands at 32 will continue, but if the “show up and win team” takes to the field the Red Raiders lose and the streak is over.  My pick is based on the #2 ranked team showing up to play this week.  South Point by 14.

BESSEMER CITY at Community School of Davidson

The Yellow Jackets are one of the pre-season favorites to contend for the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference and they should have no trouble with this week’s opponent if that prediction is correct. Bessemer City by 21.

CHERRYVILLE at Thomas Jefferson

Cherryville figured to be another contender for the Southern Piedmont but it would seem that their 1-5 record belies those hopes.  The Ironmen have played a tougher schedule than the Gryphons and that could play to their advantage, however, a win would still be an upset.  Thomas Jefferson by 14.

EAST GASTON at HUNTER HUSS

Both of these teams have posted only one win this season.  Hunter Huss posted their first win way back in week 3 against Bessemer City but they played inspired football last week by taking South Point to the wire in overtime. East Gaston gained some much needed momentum last week with their first win this season over conference opponent Lake Norman Charter.  If the Huskies can relight the fire they had last week they win big but either way they win.  Hunter Huss by13.

FORESTVIEW at NORTH GASTON

The Jaguars are riding a five game win streak as the hottest team in the county and they have been racking up some big numbers along the way.  North Gaston’s five game win streak came to an end last week against Ashbrook.  The Jaguars have too much speed and too many athletes for the Wildcats and they have not played anyone this season that comes close to this week’s opposition.

LAKE NORMAN CHARTER – BYE

Pine Lake Prep at HIGHLAND TECH

Two pretty evenly matched teams fighting to stay out of the cellar.  Despite the Rams inability to score (only 19 points this season) I look for them to win in a close one.  Highland Tech by 7.
