Gaston and Lincoln Final Week Picks

Gaston and Lincoln Final Week Pigskin Picks

Game of the Week: South Point (9-1)(5-0) @ Crest (7-3)(4-1)

The South Point Red Raiders have already won a share of the Big South 4A/3A Conference Title. However, don't think for one minute that Head Coach John Devine and his Red Raider squad are content on just a share of the title. A win in this match-up gives the Red Raiders sole possession of the conference title. If the Chargers in, they create a three-way tie between them, South Point and Forestview - who beat Crest 17-14 earlier this year.

The Chargers defense has only given up an average of eight points a game, while South Point's offense is forcing 40 points a game. However, the Red Raiders are only allowing 11 points a game. Take away the loss to Clover, the Red Raiders allow only 6 points a game. Crest's offense has not been very stellar scoring only 24 points a game.

The Chargers will need to shore up their offense in order to have a chance at a share of the conference title as they host South Point tonight at Sid Bryson Stadium.

My pick: South Point 21 - Crest 14

Hunter Huss (5-5)(2-3) @ Ashbrook (4-6)(2-3)

After winning four of five games at some point during the season, the Hunter Huss Huskies have hit a wall. The Huskies lost 28-8 against Crest a week ago Monday and 30-6 to Forestview last Friday. This is not how the Huskies want to enter the playoffs. Hunter Huss will have the conference's #3 seed (win or lose) and will have very little to no hope of even having a home game in the post-season.

Ashbrook, win or lose, has the #2 seed in 4A locked up. However, they are looking to better their record and have momentum going into the playoffs. Ashbrook has not lost to Hunter Huss at home since 1996. The odds favor Ashbrook in this cros-town rivalry match-up.

However, this is the traditional Battle of the Bell between these two. Eventhough this game means almost nothing in regards to the post-season, there is pride on the line between the two.

My pick: Ashbrook 35 - Hunter Huss 30

East Gaston (1-9)(1-5) @ Forestview (7-3)(4-1)

The Jaguars are looking to close out the season on a solid note. The Jaguars already have the conference's #2 3A seed locked up. If Crest happens to beat South Point, they would end up in the midst of three-way tie for the confrence title given if they beat East Gaston. That does not look like a tall mountain for the Jaguars to climb as the Warriors have struggled for most of the season.

However, the Warriors run a Wish-bone offense and the Jaguars have struggled with teams that have ran offenses similar to those.

My pick: Forestview 42 - East Gaston 7

North Lincoln (7-3)(4-1) @ Lincolnton (7-3)(3-2)

North Lincoln is currently at second place in the Southern Piedmont 2A/1A conference. However, a loss to Lincolnton would put them in a tie between them, Lincolnton and Bessemer City. The Wolves have been up and down this year and have had a hard time staying consistent. The Knights have had a solid season and are hoping to keep the momentum going into the playoffs.

If the Wolves lose another game, they will end up in fourth place in the conference and would draw a very low playoff berth since this would be their third conference loss. Lincolnton does usually thrive when faced with adversity.

My pick: North Lincoln 31 - Lincolnton 28

Cherryville (4-6)(1-4) @ Bessemer City (7-3)(3-2)

This looks like another mis-match on paper. However when it's a rivalry, you can throw the records out the door. Cherryville, being the only 1A team in the conference, has clinched the conference's #1 1A seed and will host a playoff game or two. Bessemer City, on the other hand, has more at stake. If the Yellow Jackets lose, they could end up as low as the conference's #4 2A seed.

The chances are slim that the Yellow Jackets will lose this one, but do not underestimate the Ironmen. They have struggled, but are a hungry team.

My pick: Bessemer City 35 - Cherryville 14

South Iredell (4-6)(2-3) @ East Lincoln (9-1)(5-0)

Win or lose, the Mustangs have the conference's #1 2A seed locked up. The Mustangs don't have the conference title outright just yet. A win against South Iredell or a North Lincoln loss would give them sole possession of the Southern Piedmont 2A/1A conference.

The Mustangs should finish the regular season unbeaten in conference play.

My pick: East Lincoln 35 - South Iredell 10

Kings Mountain (7-3)(4-0) @ Burns (1-9)(0-4)

The Mountaineers have turned a huge corner these past two years. After having seven losing seasons out of the past eight years, the Mountaineers have a share of the conference title and the conference's top 3A spot clinched. A win over Burns would give them sole possession of the conference title.

Burns has struggled for most of the season and has their first losing season since 2000. Burns hopes to play spoiler, but the Mountaineers are just too strong this year.

My pick: Kings Mountain 35 - Burns 7
