Kings Mountain escapes R-S Central’s rally
Kings Mountain has punched in their ticket for the post-season with a 17-16 victory in a game where leads changed like the colors on the autumn leaves. The first quarter mainly saw turnover after turnover. Each team racked up two turnovers each in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Kings Mountain kicker Alex Randall broke the ice with a 24 yard field goal to give Kings Mountain an early 3-0 lead. The Hilltoppers stormed back with a Deshawn Littlejohn three yard run and R-S Central was up 7-3. Kings Mountain QB Michael Roberts would give the Mountaineers the lead right back with a nine-yard run. The Mountaineers led 10-7 at half-time.
The Hilltoppers grabbed momentum in the second half with a Murray five yard touchdown run to give R-S Central a 14-10 lead. The Mountaineers would be back on top before the third period was over with a Michael Roberts one-yard run. The only score in the fourth quarter was a safety for R-S Central when a botched punt snap went over the Kings Mountain punter’s head. It was kicked out of the end zone cutting the Mountaineers lead to 17-16.
It could have been more if it was not for another Kings Mountain fumble deep in Hilltoppers territory. R-S Central had two chances to leave John Gamble Stadium with a Will Thompson field-goal. His first attempt sailed wide, but Kings Mountain was called for running into the kicker. Thompson missed the second try and Kings Mountain took a knee on their next play and escaped with a narrow 17-16 victory.
Kings Mountain has a chance to clinch the conference’s first 3A seed with a victory over Burns next week. The Hilltoppers can possibly creep in if they beat Chase next Friday.
