Gaston and Lincoln Week 11 Pigskin Picks

Gaston and Lincoln Week 11 Pigskin Picks

Game of the Week: South Point (8-1)(4-0) @ North Gaston (8-1)(5-0)

Man, could we please move this game down to the final week? This is going to be the biggest game of the season for Gaston County. It will be the regular season finale for North Gaston since they are off the final week. However, South Point has one more game left after this one. None of that is important at this time. That does not matter right now. The Red Raiders have a shot to win a share of the conference title with a win over the Wildcats. North Gaston has a shot for their first ever outright conference title if they beat the Red Raiders. In fact if the Wildcats win it, it’s theirs and theirs alone. The Red Raiders would have to settle for second place if they lose to the Wildcats.

Both teams have only one loss on their schedule. South Point, in fact is coming off a huge 42-20 beating by Charlotte Latin. North Gaston lost earlier in the season to Charlotte Catholic in a 26-24 nail-biter. All records go out the windows on this game.

My pick: North Gaston 35 – South Point 28

Hunter Huss (4-5)(1-3) @ Forestview (3-6)(0-4)

This is a must-win for both teams. If Hunter Huss loses, they still have a chance to redeem their playoff hopes against their arch-rival, Ashbrook. However if Forestview loses, this will more than likely be the end of their season. With many 3A teams reaching the minimum of four wins and Forestview only at three wins with none of them being conference victories, that puts the Jaguars behind the eight ball. A win in this game will keep the Jaguars’ post-season hopes alive. Nevertheless, they will have to win out and that includes a must-win at East Gaston next Friday.

This is not a battle for a conference title, but this game is just as big as both are looking to play an extra game on November 9th.

My pick: Forestview 28 – Hunter Huss 21

East Gaston (0-9)(0-4) @ Crest (5-4)(2-2)

There is not very much to discuss here. The Chargers of Crest got back into the winning column after two straight blowout losses with a blowout win of their own as they pounded Hunter Huss 56-14 avenging their last two losses to the Huskies. East Gaston continues to scrape and scuffle as the season rolls along. More injuries have depleted the Warriors team and the Warriors are relying on more JV players to fill some important rolls. This will be a season for Warrior fans and players to forget. The Chargers should get their first home victory in four games.

My pick: Crest 52 – East Gaston 7

Cherryville (5-4)(1-3) @ Lincolnton (5-4)(4-0)

The Ironmen have lost three straight conference games after having a solid 5-1 start for the 2007 season. The Ironmen are going to try and avoid their fourth straight loss as they travel to Lincolnton, but it will not be easy. After the Wolves started the season 1-4 playing a brutal nonconference schedule, they bounced back in time for conference play and are in the race for the conference title. They sit alone at the top with North Lincoln and South Iredell right behind them in the standings. If Lincolnton beats Cherryville but loses to North Lincoln and South Iredell beats East Lincoln next week that would create a three-way tie for the SP2A/1A race. That is not very likely to happen, however.

My pick: Lincolnton 34 – Cherryville 14

South Iredell (5-4)(3-1) @ Bessemer City (3-6)(1-3)

The South Iredell Vikings have hit a hot spell after losing four straight. The Vikings find themselves in the hunt for a share of the SP2A/1A conference title. They have to watch out for the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets, however. They have been coming to life and have been making games much closer than they were at the start of the season. The Yellow Jackets are better than their record indicates and they would love to catch South Iredell napping for their big game next week against East Lincoln.

My pick: South Iredell 24 – Bessemer City 21

North Lincoln (7-2)(3-1) @ West Lincoln (1-9)(0-5)

West Lincoln’s playoff hopes have all but went up in smoke after they were torched by East Lincoln 57-24. Now, it’s all about pride. Can they play spoiler as the Knights come in with looking to keep their run for the conference title alive? The Knights should not have much trouble with the Rebels, but in a rivalry game anything can happen.

My pick: North Lincoln 42 – West Lincoln 21

Playoff picture (Bold = in the playoffs, Underline = still alive, Plain = no playoffs)

Big South

North Gaston 8-1 (5-0)
South Point 8-1 (4-0)
Crest 5-4 (2-2)
Ashbrook 5-5 (3-2)
Hunter Huss 4-5 (1-3)
Forestview 3-6 (0-4)
East Gaston 0-9 (0-4)

SP2A/1A

Lincolnton 5-4 (4-0)
South Iredell 5-4 (3-1)
North Lincoln 7-2 (3-1)
East Lincoln 6-4 (3-2)
Cherryville 5-3* (1-3)
Bessemer City 3-4 (1-3)
West Lincoln 1-9 (0-5)

* = Cherryville gets an automatic playoff berth by virtue of being the only 1A team in the SP2A/1A conference that plays in the NCHSAA in football.
