Kings Mountain’s run ends

After turning their season around from a 1-3 start and winning ten straight games, the Mountaineers taste defeat once again and will not advance to the state title. The Mountaineers lost a hard-fought 30-14 loss to Kannapolis A.L. Brown.

From the start of the game, it looked like the Mountaineers would be in full control of the game. Kings Mountain ate up 9 minutes and 30 seconds with their first drive of the game. The drive resulted in a 14-yard pass from Michael Roberts to Devon Thompson.

Kannapolis drove down the field on the ensuing drive and got inside Kings Mountain’s 20-yard line. However, the Wonders could not capitalize. However, the Wonders made up for it early in the second quarter when Billy Simpton intercepted a pass from Michael Roberts and returned it near the Mountaineers’ 10-yard line. Travis Riley would punch it in from the one yard line and the game was tied at 7-7.

After that, the Wonders just poured it on. Wonders’ QB Jamill Lott used both his arm and his feet to put two more scores on the board. He scored on a 12-yard run to put the Wonders up 14-7 and then an 8-yard pass to T.J. Johnson to make the score 21-7 at half-time.

The third quarter would be a stalemate. But in the fourth quarter, Kings Mountain broke the ice when Michael Roberts hit Terrance Young for a 61-yard pass play to put Kings Mountain in prime scoring position. Michael Roberts put Kings Mountain within one score with a one-yard touchdown run.

Wonders kicker Morgan McDaniel made up for an earlier missed field-goal and nailed a 20-yarder to extend the Wonders’ lead to 24-14. The Wonders put the game away when Antwan Jordan ran a 14-yard touchdown run. The final score was 30-14.
