Consider this scenario...

A team has the ball on their 20 yardline. A running play nets 15 yards to the 35. However there is a holding penalty at the 32 bringing the ball back to the 22. The resulting down and distance is 1st and 8.

How is this play accounted for in the stats?

Ignore my first two post, battery in my keyboard was dying and I failed to proofread.

Remember that holding is a penalty that is assessed from the spot of the foul so the results of the play still stand. In your scenario the runner would be credited with a 12 yard gain and the team would be assessed a 10 yard penalty and I think (not sure) would also be credited for a first down.  Yards after the penalty are not credited since he might not have gained those yards without the infraction.
