Thoughts/Review: Wooowwww. So much offense by both teams. After the first three offensive and two defensive drives of the game it was 21-0 TJ and it looked like TJ's offense and defense was just going to be too much for the CSD Spartans. But from that point on, for the last 3 and a half quarters, the Spartans were able to match TJ TD for TD, and were able to force 3 fumbles. TJ has had 4 fumbles in the last 2 games, 3 tonight. It is CRUCIAL that TJ gets that cleaned up before they head into Bessemmer City in 2 weeks. The CSD QB is one heck of a player. For most of the night, Watts was able to use his legs to escape (immense) pressure. And while in general, TJ didn't leave any WRs wide open, TJ's secondary was just unable to make plays on the ball probably because they were focused TOO much on the receivers instead of on the ball. Shamar Petty is a good young player, and was a "shining" example tonight of what can happen when you keep your eye on the ball and make plays on the ball, instead of just focusing on the receiver(s). This game was a scoring and turnover fest on homecoming night (a night that hasn't been too kind to TJ at home in recent years) but either way TJ came out on top and are now 7-0 for the 1st time in team history. Next week we travel to Highland Tech (for the 3rd straight year?? or 4th?? lol) before we end the season at Bessemer, then home against MICS on Senior Night, and then at Union Academy.
The last 3 weeks are shaping up to be a grueling test for TJ offensively and defensively. MICS and Union Academy with their air attacks, and Bessemer with their heavy ground attack. TJ's defense matches up very good against the run in general. A very strong front 7 when healthy. If TJ gets up early against Bessemer as it stands now I think Bessemer would be in trouble, and the same goes for MICS and Union Academy. But if TJ were to get down early against Bessemer, MICS, and Union Academy, then they could be in trouble. This TJ offense is capable of putting up points, but with some of our best players playing both ways, the importance of getting an early lead cannot be overstated. TJ stifled Bessemer City's offense last season, and while the game was relatively close at half, TJ went on to win 42-8. This years game will very likely be much closer, especially since it will be at Bessemer, but with a TJ offense that right now looks just as good or better than last season, and a still very solid run defense, I would give TJ a 1-2 TD edge right now.
