It's way to early to have an official top 25 for 3A's, but I'll show you what I have right now.

Note:  If you are easily offended with where your team is ranked, this is not a list for you:

  1. Dudley
  2. Hillside
  3. A.C. Reynolds
  4. Weddington
  5. Charlotte Catholic
  6. Cape Fear
  7. Southern Nash
  8. Havelock
  9. Western Alamance
  10. Southern Durham
  11. Eastern Guilford
  12. A.L. Brown
  13. T.C. Roberson
  14. Conley
  15. Jacksonville
  16. Jay M. Robinson
  17. Crest
  18. West Rowan
  19. Southeast Guilford
  20. Watauga
  21. Eastern Alamance
  22. Asheville
  23. Orange
  24. Monroe
  25. E.E. Smith

Other schools near the top 25 include Lee County, Clayton, Tuscola, West Carteret, Marvin Ridge, Concord, and Hunter Huss.  Only 14 of the top 25 teams in the above list were 3A schools in 2016.  Being ranked in the 3A Top 25 is not the same as it was last year.

This is not the official top-25 because things will change in the next 10 weeks.  Probably sometime near August 10th I will release an official top-25 list.  In the meantime, please feel free to include your own top 25 list.

Wow! No Rocky Mount? or JH Rose?

As stated above, this is merely my thoughts at this time. This is not a preseason ranking but merely showing my thoughts at this time.

I am taking a "wait and see" approach with Rose. I don't know if they will have the defense to stay competitive. Rose had a large senior class graduate.

With Rocky Mount, they also lost a lot of talent via graduation. The Gryphons are used to being undervalued by me and others so this is nothing new for them. Coach Battle could care less where I have the Gryphons ranked. He only cares about where his team is in December.

1. Dudley
GAP
2. Hillside
3..etc etc
Dudley is the clear and away favorite in 3AA. However, think about this. Dudley, Kannapolis, Concord, JH Rose, Conley and Cape Fear should all be 3AA at least we think.
3A is Catholic, maybe AC Reynolds and then who? Havelock? Southern Nash? 3A will be very interesting, 3AA will be a blood bath come playoff time.

With some schools dropping down from 4a to 3a will that maybe drop concord down to 3a for the playoffs.

My feeling is that Concord will go down to small 3A.  I think Coach Padgett is one of the coaches that can take a 7-4 team and make them 9-2.  He doesn't panic.  This year he doesn't have as many Jimmy and Joes...at least that's my opinion.  If Coach Padgett wins the SPC, he will be in the running for 3A Coach of the Year.  But yes, I agree 100 percent with you.

I can see that. Oh forgot, Crest should be 3A as well.

It really is way early to figure this out but what the heck...it's all in fun & hopefully nobody get offended. Fat chance nowadays!
Let me begin by saying I had about 60 teams on my list to start out of the approximately 120 total teams with this new realignment. 3A (& AA) is just loaded. Trying to differentiate between A/AA & East/West is folly in many cases so it's all 3A to me for now. I pared the list down to 37 and tried to come up with an early ranking so here goes:

1. Dudley
2. Hillside
3. Catholic
4. Cape Fear
5. AC Reynolds
6. Havelock
7. Conley
8. Eastern Guilford
9. Weddington
10. Orange
11. Southern Nash
12. Monroe
13. Jacksonville
14. AL Brown
15. Western Alamance
16. Southern Durham
17. JM Robinson
18. Crest
19. Rose
20. Lee County
21. SW Guilford
22. Watauga
23. Mt Tabor
24. SE Guilford
25. Eastern Alamance

Conner P, thanks for sharing your list. I think we have 21 of the same 25 teams in our top-25. I'll tell you the teams that I did not have in my top 25:

1. Rose. Rose has a huge question mark on its shoulders right now. I don't think they will stop enough teams on defense. However, Rose is in an open enrollment LEA. This is a big deal because I personally believe that the Rose program would be very attractive to many athletic players. Rose's success might come at the detriment of DH Conley.
2. Lee County. Lee County was the "best of the rest" in my rankings. Had them at 26th (and Rocky Mount at 27th. I see you don't have the Gryphons in your Top 25 either).
3. SW Guilford. I am not yet sold on the Cowboys. There is some potential in this program but I don't know if they will end the regular season with anything better than a 6-5 record. I'm taking a "wait and see approach".
4. Mount Tabor. A coaching change at Mount Tabor occurred. This program could have top 25 talent. At this point I'm being overtly cautious.

Thanks for sharing your stuff. I think it looks very good.

Little fact about the new Mt. Tabor coach. He is the brother of the new North Meck HC.

Jim... it's all good. It was very difficult to compile a list/ranking at this point. There are many teams not listed on yours and mine that legit cases can be made for inclusion. I can see some big changes between now and August. By the end of the season... my list could look foolish...I accept that. A lot is really speculative at this point. In some cases it is a gut feeling or hunch (backed up with some reasoning & study of course).
Rocky Mount could be very good. 2 years ago I was very high on them & was told flat out "no". I just feel they lost a ton of very important talent to graduation this year. Could they be very good? Absolutely.
SW Guilford is just a team I look at and feel they have a couple of very talented players that could really elevate them. I might be way off base but they could surprise. They are definitely well back of Dudley in that conference.

ConnerP, you hit the nail on the head. It's more true now than ever before, but there are about 40-60 really good 3A schools in North Carolina. There will be a few schools that I don't have on my radar that will go berserk this year and win 9 or 10 regular season games.

I remember you being high on Rocky Mount. At the time I did not share your lofty opinion but you happened to be point on. I thought Rocky Mount would be a 2nd round and done team. I was very wrong that year.

Video Killed the Radio Star.... more Bobo! Sorry Jim, couldn't resist.

Enjoyed the commentary. I think we agree that a lot will change between now and Fall. 3A is just gonna be brutal come playoff time. Everywhere I go I hear Coaches & Fans alike talking about it. Heck, the CC boys like Cougs may have to double up on confession!
I still think Dudley is a clear favorite even having to replace their QB. I am really looking forward to 3A this Fall.
