1 Replies and 172 Views The devil with the blue dress on? Yes, Brevard wins the 1982 3A state championship  172  1 Started by  Jim West From 1968 to 1988, Brevard never had a losing season.  Not one.  In fact, Brevard was a force to be reckoned with.  1982 was the pinnacle of this success. Brevard started the season with three non-conference games.  While struggling against West Henderson (a 15 to 9 win), Brevard easily dispatched of Hendersonville (37-0) and North Buncombe (20-0).  Next would be their tough conference, filled with teams named Pisgah, Tuscola, Erwin, and A.C. 0 Replies and 105 Views The 1981 Walter Williams Bulldogs repeat as 3A state football champs  105  0 Started by  Jim West Williams was on fire!  And everyone else had to take a step back. Walter Williams started the season off by playing 4A foes Grimsley and High Point Central.  The Whirlies lost 25-0 and the Bison also went down (15-13).  Next on the docket was Southern Alamance.  While the score doesn&39;t seem that close (22-7), that was the 2nd closest a conference opponent got to the Bulldogs that year.  Here are the rest of the conference results:   Williams 39, Orange ...

0 Replies and 99 Views The 1980 Walter Williams Bulldogs reign victorious in the 3A state championship  99  0 Started by  Jim West From 1978 to 1982, the Bulldogs in Burlington had an incredible run.  Their overall record was 60-3.  They only had one loss in the regular season during this period of time (Cummings, 1979, 20-16), and as a result, Williams did not make the playoffs that year.   This was in an era when only 16 3A teams fought for the right to play for a state championship game, and with 16 3A conferences, you had to win your conference to play for it all. Williams played with a chip on...

0 Replies and 234 Views The 1978 Watauga Pioneers win the 3A state football championship  234  0 Started by  Jim West Back in 1978, Watauga was in its second year as an NCHSAA member.  For the previous 12 years, the Pioneers were part of the WNCHSAA.  After the WNCHSAA folded, Watauga would join the NCHSAA as a 3A member. Unlike most teams today who win championships, Watauga did not score at will.  In fact, during the 1978 season Watauga would average 20 points per game.  During this era, most teams would score, on average, between 14 to 17 points. Watauga started the season out again...

1 Replies and 228 Views The 1977 Western Guilford Hornets: 3A state champions  228  1 Started by  Jim West With the WNCHSAA folding, in 1977 the NCHSAA expanded by 38 schools.  The majority of these 38 schools would go to the 3A classification.  For the 1977 school year, there would be 126 schools playing in the 3A classification.  In 1977, there would be 16 3A conferences...and 16 playoff bids. Bottom line:  win your conference or you will not be in the playoffs. The Hornets of Western Guilford started the 1977 on shaky ground, losing to Page (28-21) and Ragsdale (22-0).&nb...

1 Replies and 325 Views Western Alamance 38, Jacksonville 7  325  1 Started by  ConnerP I admit to being surprised by the margin. For all I heard from certain parts this week, Jacksonville was too big, too strong, too fast & had too many horses for Western Alamance.... Western Alamance dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and was the faster team. End of story. I’ll give a better run down tomorrow perhaps.
